Yorkshire Terrier - Yorkie Gifts

As the name implies, the Yorkie was developed in the Yorkshire region of England, a rugged territory where the boom in the industrial revolution brought Scotsman south to work in the mines. It is generally accepted that these migrating workers carried with them several varieties of Scottish terriers that interbred with local dogs, eventually producing the pattern and type that we see today on the Yorkshire Terrier. (continued)...that suggests the foundation dogs likely included the Skye and Dandy Dinmont Terrier, as well as the Manchester Terrier from which the Yorkie may draw its signature coloring. As with many other terrier varieties, they were bred to hunt vermin in the mines, barns and farmhouses of the area. The Yorkshire Terrier stands 6-7 inches at the shoulder and weighs an average of 7 lbs. While born black and tan, the adult Yorkie should be a deep, steel blue and tan. This is the kind of terrier that has never let go of its natural traits, retaining a tendency to dominance, independence, and ferocity out of proportion to its size. They will face up to a much larger and aggressive dog without batting an eye or backing down. A Yorkie bonds with their owner but may be wary with people they don’t know. Despite their independent streak they are very demanding of attention from their humans and will express displeasure when they don’t get it.
