Whippet Gifts

Because they are a result of inter-breeding amongst the Greyhound and the Italian Greyhound, which had likely been going on for centuries, it is uncertain just when they emerged as a distinct breed. Paintings done in the 17th century by Jean Baptiste Oudry, are reportedly of the Whipppets presented to King Louis XV of France, but the dogs shown are referred to in other French texts as greyhounds. (continued)...a fascination with dog racing that made the Whippet highly popular in England, and brought the dog to a point where focus was given to breeding programs and standards eventually developed. The Whippet stands 18-22 inches at the withers and weighs 25-45 lbs. They are accepted in any color of pattern. A lingering independent streak means that the Whippet requires firm and consistent training to keep the upper hand with this very intelligent dog. They are engaging, sweet-natured and very amenable with people and other pets they have been raised with, making them ideal for families. Remember though, that this is a dog that retains prey drive instincts, and make sure they are not allowed loose where other small animals may be present. Physically slender and mentally “soft”, the Whippet does not need harsh correction and will do poorly in an overly strict household.
