Because they are a result of inter-breeding amongst the Greyhound and the Italian Greyhound, which had likely been going on for centuries, it is uncertain just when they emerged as a distinct breed. Paintings done in the 17th century by Jean Baptiste Oudry, are reportedly of the Whipppets presented to King Louis XV of France, but the dogs shown are referred to in other French texts as greyhounds.
