Shih Tzu Gifts

The Shih Tzu is one of the Asian breeds that DNA analysis has shown to have descended from the Gobi Kitchen Midden dog, making them one of the oldest of breeds. There is evidence of the type existing as far back as at least the 16th century, with their charming little faces captured in paintings from that era. That engaging appearance earned them the nickname Chrysanthemum Dog, for their face resembling the flower. But they are also known as the Lion Dog, an animal revered for its bravery. (continued) It is said that the original Chinese breeding stock was imported from Tibet in the 17th century, after which the breed becoming so popular with the royal court, that nobody else was allowed to own one. The first pair was not exported officially until the 1930s, when dogs were sent to England. A Shih Tzu may reach up to 11 inches at the withers and weigh 9-16 lbs. They are accepted in any combination of colors and markings. This is a happy, affectionate and playful little dog that must live with people, because they adore them. They have a bit of an obstinate streak that can be overcome with proper training, but it can make them difficult to housebreak. A “sometimes” barker, they are normally good indoors, but are also a sensitive and slightly reactive dog that can snap if startled or pestered beyond their patience limit.
