Scottish Terrier Gifts

Popularized as the “Scotty”, this is one of the several varieties once lumped together under the label “Skye Terriers”. They had in common, their physical build, which was suited to the purpose they were bred for, that of hunting and pursuing prey that went to ground or into burrows. This melting pot of breeds confuses the history of all of them, with books and paintings producing portraits of dogs that appear to be very close in type, if not exactly the same dog. By the 19th century, the large number of terriers in Scotland were classified either as Dandy Dinmont or Skye Terriers, however the latter was more a geographical designation than a breed one. (continued from above) ... the dogs were separated by physical types and characteristics, which were then focused on to produce dogs of consistent type that adhered to specific standards. A Scottish Terrier stands 10-11 inches at the withers, and weighs 19-23 lbs. They are accepted in the colors of black, wheaten and any brindle variation, with the most minimal of white permitted on the chin and chest. Lively, energetic and very intelligent, the Scottish Terrier nonetheless retains many of the sometimes difficult traits of terriers, including stubbornness, and a certain amount of prey drive. When trained early and consistently to obey all members of the family, it is an amenable pet that will adhere to the household members and nobody else.
