DNA analysis has shown the Samoyed to be one of the fourteen oldest known breeds of dogs, with a history that is traced back over 3,000 years through archaeological remains. A handsome and hardy dog, the Samoyed owes its name to the Samoyed people of Siberia. Hunters and fishermen, they bred a dog suited to the harsh weather, and capable of hauling sleds as well as keeping their owners warm at night by sleeping with them. Artic explorers who began penetrating the extreme cold of northern Russia, brought the dogs back with them. Among the more famous uses for which Samoyeds were employed, are Roald Amundsen’s trip to the South Pole. (continued below)
