Even the average dog lover when considering the poodle, has some idea that is its French in origin, perhaps due to fashion plates in years gone by that showed models with their “Fifi” on a leash. The breed has been around for over four centuries, but appears to have no single confirmed country of origin. France has now been accepted as the birthplace of at least the modern poodle, which is now delineated by its height at the shoulder and divided into the standard, miniature and toy poodle. Most often portrayed as a pampered pet, the poodle was developed as a hunting and retrieving dog, with the show cut so popular today, evolving from a field cut that left thick fur on the joints that would suffer most when the dog took to cold water. (continued) Standard poodles range from 15 inches up at the shoulder, and weigh 45-70 lbs. Miniature poodles are 11-15 inches at the withers, and weigh 15-17 lbs. The toy version stands under 10 inches and weighs 6-9 lbs. All varieties are accepted in any solid color. The poodle in any of its three divisions is a highly intelligent animal that learns tricks easily, often serving as performers for stage, screen and circuses. They are gregarious with people and other animals, and affectionate with their family, often taking affront if they are left out of daily life or special events. The standard poodle is the most stable of the three in temperament and has frequently been employed as a service dog for police, as well as a hunting dog. The miniature and toy varieties have undergone some unscrupulous breeding due to their popularity, resulting in some lines with a tendency to be high strung, and persistent barkers. ©DogDecor.com
