The Spitz breeds native to countries like Iceland eventually formed the foundation of many European breeds, including the Pomeranian, which was first developed in a region of the same name that is now part of both Germany and Poland. Typified by the Spitz pointed ears and curling tail, the first Poms to make their way to England courtesy of Queen Charlotte in the late 18th century, were not the small dog of today, but a medium size animal of 30 lbs. Charlotte’s granddaughter Queen Victoria helped to popularize the breed by establishing her own kennels, and because she preferred small dogs, selective breeding began reducing their body size, while retaining... (continued) ...all the physical features and hardiness of their ancestors. Today, the Pomeranian ranges in height from 7-12 inches and weighs 3-7 lbs. They are permitted in all colors, patterns and variations. An energetic and talented animal, the Pomeranian learns tricks easily, but occasionally ones you would rather they not practice. Sometimes stubborn and willful as well as persistent barkers, a Pom needs to learn early that the owner is top dog, with discipline and training practiced consistently by all members of the household. They are affectionate without being clingy, merry, and able to get along with other animals in the household, but may take on a larger dog that invades their territory, as they have no fear and a disproportionate concept of their own size.
