Cardigan Welsh Corgi Gifts

Pembroke Welsh Corgi – Technically inseparable from the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, it is hard to say which came first, or if indeed there was ever a difference until the last hundred years. Theories suggest that the Corgi either developed from Swedish Valhunds, which came to the British Isles with Vikings in the 8th century, or evolved from Celts dogs that traveled south hundreds of years before that. They were bred for the specific purpose of herding cows by nipping at their heels, their short stature being handy for rolling out of the way of kicks. (continued below)

(continued) The two varieties, although they were not identical, were inter-bred until the 1930s, when the move was made to enhance their differences and separate them into two breeds. Corgis stand 10-12 inches at the withers, and weigh 25-30 lbs. Their outer coat comes in red, fawn, sable or black and tan, with or without white markings in specific areas. An intelligent and energetic dog, the Corgi generally gets along well with children who understand the proper and respectful way to treat a dog. They may try to herd family members by nipping at the heels, but this can be eliminated with a firm hand in training, which should be undertaken at an early age. Corgis can be an excitable dog that reacts aggressively to threats against their home/family. They may not be the right choice for families with very young children. © DogDecor.com
