The Pekingese originated in China, and is one of the oldest known breeds of dogs. A study of ancient remains suggests that it, along with other breeds such as the Japanese Chin, Shih Tzu and longhaired Chihuahua may have descended from what is known as the Gobi Kitchen Midden Dog. Dogs under six pounds are referred to as “sleeve Pekingese”, the kind which was popular in China. Those weighing 6-8 lbs are referred to as “minis”, however neither of those is an official breed designation. All colors are accepted, with or without a black face mask. They can be very picky about what they eat, and easily pick up the stress of their owners and use it to their advantage. Leery of strangers, the Pekingese can become so passionately attached to their owner that they react aggressively to other family members. Not suggested for small children unable to understand this part of their nature. © DogDecor.com
