Papillon Gifts

The first visual evidence of a Papillon like dog is found in Italy, where the history of the breed development can be quite literally traced through the artwork of the masters. As early as the 13th century they were noted in portraits of royalty and merchant class alike, with one of the most notable paintings being the Venus of Urbino, done by the famous Titian in 1542. First known as the Epagneul Nain, or dwarf spaniel, they sported the typical drop-type ear, and were sometimes referred to as a squirrel dog for the description of how the tail curled up over its back. (continued) It is said that the companion dog Marie Antoinette kept in prison with her was a Papillon, which was taken from her prior to the execution and returned to a residence that retains the name Papillon House. The Papillon stands 8-11 inches at the withers and weighs 7-10 lbs. They are a parti-color dog, never a solid, and any color other than white must cover the ears on both sides and extend over the face. One of the hardier of the very small breeds, Papillons are very good with older, considerate children, and love a good romp. They are affectionate, energetic and lively but also a dog with an even temperament. Occasionally some lines produce dogs that are overly sensitive to noise and disruption, making for a nervous and high-strung animal. They are generally obedient, but can be a bit difficult to housebreak. A Papillon gets along well with other pets it is introduced to early on, but can take instant dislike to strange animals. © DogDecor.com
