Newfoundland Dog Breed Gifts

As the name indicates, the breed originated on the island/province of Newfoundland, Canada. As a land mass separate from the nearest shore region, which is Labrador (now part of a conjoined province Newfoundland/Labrador), the first dogs of necessity must have come from outside. Some theories suggest large, bear-like dogs that arrived with Vikings circa 1000A.D. However, it is more likely that their roots lie in mastiff dogs that arrived with European fisherman in the 16th century, with the possible addition of native land dogs that crossed the water and/or ice between the island and mainland Labrador. (continued) The basic type of the breed has been “set” for at least four centuries. They were developed to work on boats, pulling nets and anything else from the water. Other uses included carting, for which it was prized during wartime. A Newfoundland stands 25-29 inches at the shoulder and can weigh 100-150 lbs. Color is ranked behind structure and soundness for competition, but they are accepted in black, brown, gray, or white and black. For all its size, the Newfoundland is truly a gentle giant. They are sweet natured, loyal, affectionate and so totally devoted to their owners, that re-homing is often impossible. Gentle with children and friendly with everyone, they may nonetheless be alert and watchful of strangers, putting themselves between a loved one and the threat they perceive. Generally good with family pets and other animals, the occasional male may be aggressive with other dogs. Training must be done with firmness but a gentle voice, as they are highly sensitive to tone. © DogDecor.com
