Maltese Gifts

As the name suggests, the Maltese originated as a breed, on the island of Malta. However, with the isolated location, the ancestors had to come from somewhere, and are thought to possibly include a Spitz type dog as well as the Tibetan Terrier that arrived with travelers and were bred down in size to be companion dogs. They spread to other areas of Europe in the same manner as the foundation dogs arrived, by ship and with travelers. (continued below)

(continued) Identified in Greek records of the third century B.C. as coming from the Melita, or Maltese breed, the dog went on to outcrosses with miniature spaniels and poodles, which further refined its look. Used as a lap and even “sleeve dog”, the tiny Maltese was a favorite of royalty and politicians. A Maltese stands 8-10 inches in height and weighs 6-9 lbs. It is accepted only in white, but is permitted to have tan or lemon shading on the ears, although this is not desirable. A lovable, affectionate and high-spirited companion, the Maltese dotes on their family and gets along well with other pets. While they are not strictly speaking, high-strung, the Maltese is ever alert to strange noises, and can be reactive when treated roughly or in a harsh manner, particularly by children not familiar with the dog. Coddling and overprotecting can easily produce a neurotic dog. They are very intelligent and learn tricks well if rewarded, however house training may take longer than other breeds. © DogDecor.com
