Lhasa Apso Gifts & Merchandise

Not a great deal is known about the root dogs in the ancestry of the Lhasa Apso, because it was developed in the isolated country of Tibet, the sole property of religious houses and nobles for some two thousand years. When traveler’s succeeded in penetrating the country’s borders, many were given these prized dogs as gifts from the Dalai Lama, the high spiritual leader. At home, they were guardians of the holy temples, and companion dogs, a role they continued as the breed spread into Europe and eventually North America in the first half of the 20th century. (continued) A Lhasa Apso stands 10-11 inches at the withers and weighs 13-15 lbs. They are accepted in all colors, with or without dark tips to their ears. A merry, energetic little companion, the Lhasa Apso retains some threads of its original purpose and may be very watchful with strangers. Somewhat independent minded, they can be difficult to train but respond well to training that has material rewards. They are friendly with adults and children who do not taunt or tease them, and as a known barker, make good watchdogs. This is a breed that can be highly strung, and more so in a high activity or noisy household, which means they may not be the pet of choice where there are young children.
