Its name is derived from a Dutch leader of the revolution against the House of Orange, Cornelius “Kees” de Gyselaer, who brought the breed to prominence as the “people’s dog”. When the House of Orange prevailed, the breed nearly vanished due to its association with the rebels. In Holland, a Keeshond could be any of the German Spitz variations, differing only in color and size. (continued below)

During that period the dog regained some ground in Holland and was often used as a guard dog for boats. Interest in the dog renewed in the early 1900s and brought it back into the limelight.
A Keeshond ranges in height from 15-19 inches, and can vary in weight according to the registry/standard, between 35 and 65 lbs.
Alert, energetic and playful, the Keeshond is an ideal pet for children. They love to interact and their innate intelligence along with a “soft” nature makes them relatively easy to train. An outgoing dog that needs to be with people, they generally get along well with everyone, although may be reserved if not well socialized at a nearly age. © DogDecor.com | | | | |
