The growth in use of gun dogs to set or point game in the 19th century, brought about the development of several breeds, including the Irish Setter, which originally was red and white, and not as tall on the legs as today’s dog. Its rich mahogany coat and body type developed over time, to serve the huntsman in swift flight to retrieve and hardiness to withstand long days in the field.
An Irish Setter ranges from 24-28 inches at the withers, and weighs from 55-75 lbs. It comes in only two variations of one color, either rich chestnut red or mahogany, with small areas of white on the toes or a thin blaze on the forehead to be allowed. (continued below)

 | (continued) A hunting dog that loves to work, the Irish Setter is energetic, playful, high-spirited and always ready for action, whether play or in the field. Most mature as they age, but some remain on the hyper side. That, and their tendency to be independent require early obedience training and consistent commands from the entire family. Because they are highly intelligent and free spirits, they learn bad habits easily and give them up under protest. Irish Setters have a pleasing nature and are in heaven as long as they get adequate exercise and human companionship. © DogDecor.com | | | | |
