Great Dane Gifts

Although a dog similar in appearance can be found on Greek money dating from the 1st century B.C., it is generally thought that the breed of today finds its roots in mastiff types that crossed into Germany, Italy and Spain in the 5th century A.D. Highly popular in Germany for the hunting of large, aggressive prey like bears, breeding took on a focus to produce a large, well-muscled dog that could not only pursue but bring down, everything from boars to deer. The introduction of such outcrosses as the Wolfhound, added to the breed’s solid type, while other outcrosses helped produce a lithe and agile hunting dog. Great Danes stand anywhere from 28-34 inches at the withers, and weigh 100-200 lbs. depending on the sex. They are accepted in brindle, fawn, blue, harlequin, black and black mantle. (continued) While their size can be intimidating, the Great Dane is notoriously gentle, quiet, dignified, and patient with children. They are a dog that craves the company and attention of humans. Intelligent and alert, they make good guard dogs, but are not openly aggressive in the role. Obedience training is a must from an early age, if only to keep them from accidentally injuring someone with their weight or playful behavior. Does well with family pets when introduced early. Occasionally aggressive with strange dogs of same sex. © DogDecor.com
