| | | | | | | | Great Pyrenees GiftsThe Great Pyrenees as it is known in America, is one of the most ancient of breeds, with remains dating back 4,000 years that are similar in type, and suspected of being descended from even older specimens. Generally acknowledged as a major contributor to the Newfoundland and St. Bernard breeds, the Pyrenees is native to the mountain range between France and Spain. They were used primarily for guard duty of homes and flocks, but also became highly popular with the French court from the 15th to 19th centuries. The thick coat that allowed them to shake off wolves attacking their flocks, also insulated them as they were used to pull carts and munitions wagons over the mountains during WWII. (continued below)

 | (continued) A “Pyre” as they are sometimes called, stands 25-32 inches at the withers and weighs 85 lbs and up, with fitness and proportion to be considerations. Known mainly for the white variations, Pyrenees are permitted to have body markings in tan, badger, gray and reddish brown on the head and tail, with a few body spots. More than one-third body color on a white coat is a disqualification.
Known to be a dedicated worker that pursues their duties with diligence, the Great Pyrenees can be willful and headstrong, necessitating early and firm obedience training. They become attached to and protective of their family and willing to guard them, as well as any property. While generally friendly with children, they should be introduced to them at a young age. As a rule they get along well with other family pets, but males may be dog or strange animal aggressive. © DogDecor.com | | | | |
