After careful selection and breeding between three different coated varieties of German shepherd dogs, Capt. Max von Stephanitz officially registered his Deutsche Shaferhunde, which is the German translation of the name today. That first German Shepherd, a male named Horan, is the common ancestor of all dogs of the breed since. Bred specifically for the purpose of herding and guarding, instincts which were honed over time, the dog continues to excel at its original purpose and associated duties such as police work, rescue tracking, and other working pursuits. A German Shepherd measures 22-26 inches at the withers, and ranges from 77-85 lbs in weight. (continued below)

(continued) They come in most colors, with the exception of blue and liver, or washed out solids. The color white is a disqualification, although this aberration of the norm is now being promoted as its own breed. This is a highly intelligent dog that learns easily and anticipates your commands. They are eager to work and do best with directed activities that challenge them. Quiet and well-behaved indoors, they nonetheless require regular exercise. German Shepherds, or GSDs as they are known, get along well with all members of the family and tend to bond closely with their owners. Their working history has left them with a tendency to always be alert and on guard, a behavior that can be controlled with early and firm training, and consistent commands from all family members. © DogDecor.com
