Despite the name, the French Bulldog owes its origins to that great symbol of Britain, the English Bulldog. It is unclear whether the first small versions of the dog were bred on purpose or the result of undesirable breedings, but they made their way to France in the mid 19th century, possibly with English tradesmen, and were bred to French terriers. An engaging little dog, they attracted the attention of the Ladies of the Night, who were often depicted in “artworks” with their little French Bulldogs. Eventually the dogs returned to their native shores, where the English were not amused at this deviations from the original Bulldog. (continued below)

(continued) The French Bulldog averages 12 inches at the shoulder, and can weigh 19-28 lbs. They are permitted in all colors except liver, mouse, solid black, black and tan, white with black or black with white. An affable and affectionate pet, the French Bulldog gets along with almost any animal, and adores people. It is a breed that craves human attention and interaction to keep it happy. They are tolerant of children who know how to treat a dog, and interact well with your other pets and visitors. Occasionally a male may be dog aggressive. Although a bit willful, they will not do well if treated harshly to correct them. Patience is the keyword for living happily with your Frenchie. © DogDecor.com
