| | | | | | | | Dalmatian GiftsWhile it takes its name from the state/country of Dalmatia, today a part of modern Croatia, the Dalmatian has never been recognized as an indigenous Croatian dog. In 1993, its Croatian roots were officially acknowledged by the FCI, but that was the limit of pinpointing their origins. A spotted dog that strongly resembles the Dalmatian of modern times, can be seen on frescoes from Egyptian tombs, Spanish paintings of the 14th century and is even mentioned in medieval poetry, which argues that its roots are broader and go back further than previously thought or argued. It became popular under the name Dalmatian in the 19th century, possibly because the dogs that first attracted attention were from that country. (continued below)

 | (continued) Bred as a hunter, in the 1800s it gained wide popularity as a carriage dog. When imported to the U.S. that role transferred to horse-drawn fire engines, with the dog running ahead to give warning of the coming vehicle. Today, some breeders and owners have tried to resurrect its role in roadwork, taking advantage of the lithe, athletic body.
The Dalmatian stands 20-24 inches at the withers, and weighs 45-50 lbs. on average. Their coat is predominantly white with black or liver colored spots. Patching is not permitted.
Their role as a carriage dog, which required great stamina and endurance, remains an integral part of the Dalmatian’s nature today. This means they require a fair amount of exercise, and directed activity as opposed to leaving them out in the yard. They are family friendly, but as a somewhat hyper dog, require thorough socialization at an early age, and firm handling to make sure they acknowledge their owner as the alpha. Because of their energy level and the fact that if not properly trained they can become willful and even aggressive, they may not be the right choice for every family. © DogDecor.com | | | | |
