Dachshund Gifts

One of the many breeds to originate in Germany, the Dachshund was developed for pursuing the badger into its hole, thus the name, derived from “dachs” which is badger in German. The short, strong legs allowed it to dig at the burrow, and body type allowed it to enter in search of its prey. They were bred on purpose to produce the long, hanging ear to protect them from seeds and insects entering the ear, and also for the long, curved tail which was often used to haul a dog out of the badger’s burrow. (continued) ...calling it the Toy Dachshund. A standard Dachshund measures 14-18 inches at the withers and weighs up to 20 lbs. A miniature stands up to 14 inches, with a weight of up to 9 lbs. All three varieties come in shorthair, wire-hair and long-hair coats. Dachshunds are permitted in solid colors of red or cream; bi-colors of black, chocolate, gray, fawn and wild boar, with tan or cream markings; and the patterns of brindle, sable, and dappled. The “Doxie” has some very terrier-like tendencies, including a certain amount of stubbornness and tenacity. They are an intelligent and sometimes excitable dog that loves to play and play tricks on their owners. While a good pet for families, their size and the possibility of back injuries may not make them suitable for introducing while children are very small.
