Collie Gifts

The Scottish Collie as it was first called, comes in two variations, the rough-coated and smooth-coat, the only difference being the quantity and type of coat. As the name suggests, it originated in Scotland where it has served for centuries as an essential member of the farmer’s family, herding sheep and other stock. It is thought the name was derived from the Scottish sheep strain known as the Colley. Queen Victoria kept Collies at her Balmoral castle, which helped to promote their popularity. After the dog was imported to the U.S. crossing with the Borzoi produced refinements of the head and an increase in size that made it distinctly separate from its progenitors. (continued below)

(continued) The line of Collies which have played “Lassie” for more than 50 years, have an identifiable pattern of large white collar, white feet and white face blaze that has been trademarked as the “Lassie dog”. Collies range in height from 22-26 inches at the withers, and weigh 50-75 lbs. They are permitted in four color/pattern combinations: sable and white, merle, white, and tri-color. Intelligent and sweet natured, the Collie excels as a family pet and becomes very attached to their people. Good with children and other pets, they may be wary of strangers, a leftover from their days of guarding the flocks of shepherds. While not aggressive, they may take a protective stance when their masters are threatened, and are considered good guard dogs in that respect. Collies are easily trained, but must be introduced to training early to get the upper hand. © DogDecor.com
