Clumber Spaniel Gifts

The Clumber Spaniel is remarkable for both its heaviness of body, and also for being a relatively rare breed today. Not much is known of their history prior to the mid 1800s. It has been suggested that a French nobleman, the Duke of Noailles, sent all his dogs to a relative, the Duke of Newcastle, who lived at Clumber Park in England. They were then bred amongst themselves and with other English dogs, in part under the guidance of the duke’s gamekeeper. A successful hunter, although slower in the field than the smaller varieties of spaniel, the Clumber enjoyed some high profile patronage from Prince Albert, and several Kings of England. (continued) There are no records to identify what breeds may have been used to develop the type, but reference is often made to Basset Hounds and St. Bernards. A Clumber Spaniel ranges from 17-20 inches at the withers, and may weight 55-85 lbs. They are a predominantly white dog, which is permitted to have lemon or orange markings to the head, as well as freckling to the legs and tail. An all white body is desirable. Even though they have been bred for hunting, the Clumber is a sweetly affectionate family pet, without the constant prey drive of other hunting breeds. They are a “soft” dog in that it takes little effort to train them, and they can be cowed by harsh behavior. Generally amenable and accepting of other animals if well socialized, they will attach themselves to their people, but remain stand-offish with strangers. © DogDecor.com
