| | | | | | | | Chinese Crested GiftsOne of the most interesting theories about the development of the Chinese Crested, is that it owes the type and characteristics to an unknown dog breed from Africa, a precursor of modern day dogs. Other schools of thought believe it is the result of selective breeding between the Chihuahua and the Mexican Hairless dog, which is often mistaken for a type of Chihuahua, but which in fact is a very large dog of 10-40 lbs. Recent DNA testing has proven that it does share some genetic patterns with the Basenji, which did originate in Africa. Early travelers to China made note of a similar dog in the sea ports there, and it is likely that the foundation dogs were either brought from Africa to China, or vice-versa, and thus the explanation of the shared genes is made. | (continued) While the Chinese Crested averages about 12 inches in height at the withers, small deviations to either side are permitted. They come in two distinct varieties – the hairless, which has tufts on the head, ankles, and tail, and the powderpuff, which has a full coat. Both are essentially the same dog. They are permitted in any color or combination of colors, with the true Crested being defined by its skin pigment. The Chinese Crested is often thought to have the same characteristics as Chihuahuas, which is not true. They aren’t as excitable, nor prone to barking, however earlier familiarization and desensitization to noise means smoother sailing as they get older. An affectionate and agreeable dog, they make great family pets that are easily trained to obey and perform tricks. Care should be taken with young children, in part due to their small size, and also because they have no protective coat. This lack of hair also makes them sensitive to cold and sudden temperature changes. © DogDecor.com | | | | |
