Chihuahua Gifts

The smallest dog in the world, and the oldest breed in North America, the Chihuahua was named for the Mexican state where it was first discovered. However, its ancestors were from the Asian continent where such tiny dogs were prized and specifically bred. Historians assume that the breed arrived with explorers who sailed the coast in an attempt to find a way around North America. There is some evidence that it was present in the days of the Pre-Columbian Indians. Chihuahuas as a breed have a great deal of variation in both size and weight, with more emphasis being placed on a well-balanced body. However AKC draws the line at six pounds for a show dog. (continued) On average, a Chihuahua can be 6-10 inches at the withers, but has been known to reach 12-15 inches which is not desirable. They also come in both a short and long coat, which are essentially the same body types. Permissible colors are any solid, with or without markings or splashing. Often typified as noisy, a Chihuahua that is properly socialized and acclimated to the home, other people and animals, will have less reason to bark. However, they are an excitable dog, and are prone to biting when startled, which means they are not recommended for homes with children under school age. They can be fiercely devoted to their families and often bond to one person from amongst the “pack”. Chihuahuas can be easily trained to use paper or puppy pads indoors, which makes them an ideal apartment pet. They do require some exercise and a careful diet so they do not become overweight. © DogDecor.com
