They were notable water dogs, and the two pups that survived a shipwreck off the coast of Maryland in 1807, served as the founding of the breed, from matings with each other, and then native American dogs. The resulting offspring proved to be superb hunters, particularly of ducks, and excel today in both hunting sports and such activities as obedience, tracking, retrieving and field trials.
A Chesapeake Bay Retriever measures from 21-26 inches at the withers and weighs 65-80 lbs. Their colors are meant to fit in with natural surroundings, and so range from browns through other earth shades. (continued below)

 | (continued) Perhaps the most single minded of the retriever breeds, the Chesapeake has a distinct independent streak that requires a firm hand and early training. They should be socialized with other dogs, people and family pets early in their lives, so that no prey or game instinct develops. They are trainable, but it takes patience and perseverance, as the dog can be slow to mature mentally, and can hold onto any bad habits that are allowed to develop. They are a loving, and affable dog, but also energetic and bouncy which can be a poor choice with very young children that can get knocked over. © DogDecor.com | | | | |
