 | The Great Pyrenees was named after the Pyrenees Mountains in Southwestern Europe as far back as 3000 BC. While this breed is large and primarily white; their thick, double coat can also be tan or have markings of tan, badger, or grey, including full face masks. The first breeding pair of Great Pyrenees arrived in America in 1931, and while they are excellent at determining friend or foe, due to their ancient instincts, and having to make choices on their own while guarding a flock of sheep, they may not do as well in an obedience class. They do require daily exercise and weekly brushing and first time owners should be prepared for barking, especially at night. The AKC recognized this breed in 1933. This breed ranges in size from 25 to 32 inches tall at the withers. | | | | |
