The Lhasa Apso’s attitude has been described as follows 'Seldom a pet, rather a companion, often a clown but never a fool!'The Lhasa originated hundreds of years ago in Tibet, near the city of Lhasa where it was the indoor guardian of homes and monasteries. It wasn’t until 1933 when the first Lhasa’s were brought to the US and given as gifts from the 13th Dalai Lama. Their coat is long and dense to protect them from the harsh Tibetan weather, and does require frequent brushing and grooming. This breed can come in many colors from light fawn to black. Some Lhasa change color with age, lightening a few shades with time Many Lhasa Apso owners enjoy keeping their companions in the shorter 'puppy cut”. This breed can live 20 years, with the average age being 14 years old. A Lhasa appears in Disney's animated feature film Lady and the Tramp as the pound dog Peg. This breed has also shown up in other cartoon features like the widely popular SIMPSONS. The AKC recognized this breed in 1935 in the Non-Sporting Group.
