The Old English Terrier is thought to have been the source of much of what was desirable, while the Spanish Pointer may also have made some contribution. One resulting variation of the dog was all white, a disqualification today, but all the Bull Terries failed at fighting. Their heart wasn’t in it, but they proved to be imminently suitable as companion dogs who willingly worked for their masters, herding sheep, guarding, and eliminating pests. (continued below)

Bull Terriers are a good pet for the very reason they failed at guard duty – they are far too amenable to humans and other animals. Still as courageous and tenacious, they do not usually display aggression unless their owner/family is being threatened. They do not tolerate teasing, taunting, or loud confrontations between humans which can trigger a protective reaction. The dog lives to be loved and becomes extremely attached to the people in their lives.
