Bulldog Gifts

While precursors of today’s Bulldog have been around for centuries, the term was not used or recorded until the mid 1500s. Before another 200 years had passed, the variety known as the Bulldog had been refined for the specific purpose of bullbaiting and bearbaiting as a sport. This dog was lighter in the body and “front heavy”, having emphasis placed on producing heavy jaws and a strong head for grabbing the snout of a bear and hanging on. When the sports waned and were outlawed, the breed remained behind and gradually morphed into the heavier, less agile body type that we know today. (continued) a tribute to their country of origin, although their ancestors are suspected to be the Asian Mastiff. These are not yet recognized in any association. A Bulldog measures12-16 inches at the withers and weighs 50-55 lbs. A range of colors are allowed, but in a ranked preference, starting with red brindle, all other brindles, solid white, solid red, fawn, or fallow, piebald, and imperfect examples of the preceding. Today’s bulldog is a far cry from its aggressive ancestors, and is now popular as a family pet for homes or apartments due to their placid temperament and the need for only limited exercise.
