Brittany Spaniel Gifts

As the name suggests, this very popular hunting dog originates from the province of Brittany in France. Its exact ancestors are unknown, but it is thought that a combination of the orange/red spaniel and French dogs, gradually evolved into the very keen pointing hunter that we know today. Although shown as early as 1896, it was not officially recognized until 1938. Even today there is some divergence in type, with French-bred dogs resembling a spaniel type, and American bred dogs being higher on their legs and faster. In the U.S. they are known simply as the Brittany. The Brittany stands from 17-20 inches at the withers, and weighs 30-40 lbs. (continued below)

(continued) Allowed coat colors are liver and white, or orange and white, either clear or with a roan pattern, and some ticking. Tri-colors do appear, but are not desirable. A happy, alert, sweet nature makes the Brittany an ideal family pet. They are easily trained, and have a sensitive streak that means they are cowed by harsh treatment or words. As a sporting dog, they do require a fair amount of exercise. Brittanys love to work in tandem, so a family with one dog would find them the perfect second addition. Too friendly to be a guard dog, the Brittany Spaniel can be affectionately rambunctious, which means they may not be for you if there are very young children who could be knocked over and hurt in play. © DogDecor.com
