Boxer Dog Gifts

The Boxer is classified as one of the Molosser group of breeds, large dogs which are thought to have all descended from common ancestors. Molossers and thus Boxers, are referred to as mastiffs with a small “m”, as they are distinctly different from the English Mastiff which is its own breed. Like so many other of our modern breeds, the Boxer developed in Germany, the result of crossing the Bullenbeiser with the BarenBeiser and then Bulldogs from England. (continued)... while the strength that made them suitable for both of those, also allowed them to serve as carting dogs. The breed would not be stabilized until near the end of the 19th century, when studbooks were kept and a standard written. Widely used for message carrying and guard duty during the First World War, the Boxer was taken home by returning soldiers, which helped to boost its popularity. A Boxer stands from 21-25 inches at the withers, and can weigh anywhere from 55-70 lbs. The only allowable colors are fawn or brindle, with or without white. The amount of white should not exceed 1/3 of the body’s coloring. At one time the ears were always cropped and the tail docked. However dogs are being shown with “natural” ears, although a docked tail is still desirable for show. As a breed, the Boxer makes a superb family pet, gay and affectionate, bouncy and energetic, they love children and adults, but may be stand offish while they assess a stranger. Often cited for being thickheaded or stubborn, Boxers are still highly intelligent and trainable with a little concentrated and firm handling, which will also help curb their exuberance. They make an excellent guard dog and excel in areas such as police work for their courage and determination. © DogDecor.com
