The Boston Terrier is a homemade dog, bred and born in Boston through the crossing of an Old English Bulldog, and the now extinct English White Terrier, for the purposes of dog fighting. The first such dog, named Hooper’s Judge, weighed more than 30 pounds. He was bred to a smaller female, and a male pup to a smaller female, and so on until the breed had been pared down in size, and moved away from the aggressive, tenacious temperament that came with the bulldog and terrier origins. Over the last quarter of the 19th century, they became more refined in appearance, and highly popular within the region of Boston.
