| |  | | | | | | Borzoi GiftsIt has long been thought that the ancestors of the Borzoi, or Russian Wolfhound came to Russia from the Arabian empire. However, that is now in dispute with the opening of Russian archives which show that sight dogs appear to have originated somewhere between the regions of Afghanistan and Kazakhstan. However, it is relatively certain that the first of these elegant dogs were then out-crossed to native Russian dogs such as the Laika, to give them a longer, denser coat to help them resist the cold of Russia. They were later bred with other sight dogs from western countries, through the natural development of trade routes that brought the other dogs into contact with Russian breeders. | (continued)...the Borzoi is referred to as a sighthound, because they work from visual input, as opposed to scent. So prized were they, that at one time only the Tzar was permitted to give them as gifts. This backfired on the breed, which was seen as an elitist symbol, and after the Revolution many dogs were destroyed. However, with that change in the social structure of the country, the dog became less of a hunter and more of a companion breed.
A Borzoi can range from 26-28 inches at the withers, and weigh 60-90 lbs. They are accepted in any color, or combination of colors.
A sweet, affectionate dog with their family, the Borzoi is nonetheless, still a hunting breed with the hound instinct to pursue. This means they are seldom to be trusted off the leash outside of a fenced yard. If socialized with smaller family pets at a young age, they should be able to live in harmony, however new owners must remember that a small, running target is a trigger for them. They are an elegant and fastidious animal, that is quiet indoors, but which does not take well to rough handling. For this reason, they may not be suitable for homes with very young children.
