The Border Collie is a dog that developed in the area between Scotland and England, with shepherds using working criteria as their basis for selecting breeding dogs from amongst their herding varieties. The Spaniel was later added to the “sheep” dog, which is fully capable of herding cattle, horses and other livestock. Known far and wide as a black and white dog, the Border Collie also comes in red and white, black and gray, all black and tri-color. They range from 18-22 inches at the withers and 27-45 lbs. in weight. Anyone contemplating a Border Collie as a pet must remember that they were bred for working and have never lost that drive. This means they are unsuitable for apartment dwellers, but will do quite well in a kennel in the yard as long as they have regular interaction with people. They are high energy and excel at sports like flyball and agility, but their activity level may be too much for sedentary families, and can lead to destructive behaviors if they are not suitably occupied. A very smart dog, they require equally smart owners who are willing to keep up with them. © DogDecor.com
