Hunting as a sport was prevalent in the colonies, and the dog that developed was at one time known as the Virginia Hound. A refined sense of smell made them ideal for their role, which was to pursue and corner the game, and wait for the hunters to arrive.
As the name suggests, they have only one pattern, that which is black and tan and distributed over the body in specific amounts and locations. A large dog, they can range from 23-27 inches, and weights of 50-75 lbs. (continued below)

 | (continued) One of the luckier traits of the Black and Tan Coonhound is the minimal grooming required, however the pendulous ears require attention to keep them clean and free of dirt build-up. An amiable and generally easy-going dog, the Coonhound can also have a mildly stubborn streak with is handled with early and firm training. They basically live to please, and will work anytime, anywhere for their owner. But like many scent-driven breeds, it is not advisable to have them off leash unless very well trained, since they are likely to take off and forget you are there when an interesting smell comes along. Because they can play rough, a Coonhound should be supervised with younger children. This breed has a tendency to drool. © DogDecor.com | | | | |
