Belgian Sheepdog, Belgian Shepherd, Groenendael

In some areas of the world, Belgian Sheepdog refers to any one of the four distinct varieties of the breed that are recognized by the AKC. However, the AKC itself classifies only one of the four, the former Groenendael under the name Belgian Sheepdog. As with the other three varieties, the Groenendael emerged from a concentrated effort undertaken by a Belgian veterinarian just before the dawn of the 20th century, to develop Belgian Shepherd dogs of distinct coat types, since they all shared a common body type. Their colors were shared, but it was desirable to keep the coat types separate. (continued below)

(continued) However WWI decimated the dog population and in order to preserve the breed, all dogs were allowed to breed as needed, and puppies were subsequently registered by coat type. In 1959 the AKC separated the Belgian Shepherd breed into four separate classifications/breeds. The longer coated of the Belgian Shepherds, the Belgian Sheepdog is also the most popular of the four variations. They range in height at the withers from 20 ˝ to 27 ˝ inches, and weigh 44-66 lbs. in accordance with their sex. They are by nature a highly intelligent dog that is affectionate but not demonstrative with their favors. Because of their history as guard dogs, plus their size and strength, an owner must establish themselves as pack leader early on, and devote a fair amount of time to socialization in and outside of the family, as well as to training. Although they have a tendency to be vigilant on their territory, they are not an aggressive dog. The quiet behavior with regard to affection is misleading in that they become deeply attached to their family and will not tolerate being left outdoors all the time. Separation anxiety under these conditions is not uncommon. © DogDecor.com
