Bedlington Terrier Gifts

Named for a mining town in Northeast England, the Bedlington Terrier is one of the few breeds that can trace its progenitors back to a specific dog. “Old Flint”, who arrived in 1782, provided the foundation for what would at one time be called the Rothbury Terrier. The former name came from a well-known bitch who had been brought to Rothbury by her owners. Bred to hunt rats, the Bedlington was also known to work in tandem with foxhounds of the era. It has been suggested that they were in part responsible for the development of the Kerry Blue Terrier in Ireland, but there is no hard evidence. (continued below)

(continued) The dogs measure 15-17 ˝ inches at the withers, depending on sex, and weigh in the range of 17-23 lbs. with the body being proportionate to the height. They come in three solid colors: blue, sandy and liver, as well as a bi-color of each, combined with tan. An even-tempered and affectionate dog, the Bedlington Terrier enjoys family life and is great with children. If socialized with family pets, there is little problem, however a Bedlington will sometimes obey its prey drive and pursue small, strange animals. For this reason it should be kept on lead or in a fenced yard, where owners should be on the look out for holes under the fence, as they are incurable diggers. Because they shed so little, the Bedlington Terrier is considered to be a good companion for allergy sufferers. But the non-shedding does not eliminate the need for twice weekly grooming, and a recommended clip every six weeks or so. © DogDecor.com
