Basset Hound Gifts

The Basset Hound originated in France, as early as the 16th century, where the name Basset comes from French for low “bas”, and the additional “et” which can be interpreted as “rather”. They are descended from the St. Hubert’s Hound, which is similar in appearance to the Bloodhound, the only dog with a keener sense of smell than the Basset. Bred specifically for that trait, the shorter leg was desirable for the pursuing of game into the bush and hedges where taller legs were a problem. (continued) ...reportedly a gift to George Washington. Measuring just 13-15 inches at the shoulder, the dog can weigh anywhere from 50-70 lbs. Its traditional color is the tri combination of tan, black and white, but it is also accepted in red on white, red with white feet and tail, or white with lemon markings. The Basset Hound is a sweet natured and affectionate animal, ideal as a family pet. However they are a very social animal that craves company, which means they do better with another companion animal when the humans are away from home. While not stubborn, they are somewhat forgetful when it comes to training, which includes housebreaking and obedience.
