Australian Terrier Gifts

Unlike some breeds that carry the country name, the Australian Terrier was the first native bred dog to be shown in 1868, and recognized in other countries as a distinct breed. Their exact pedigree is unknown, but is attributed to the importation of British and Scottish Terriers, which went through much the same development as the Cairn, Dandy Dinmont and Yorkshire Terriers. The breed evolved as a ratter and hunter able to dive under hedges, a trait aided by their body structure, which is longer than it is high. Because they were bred to work and pursue prey, the Australian Terrier can be a problem in homes with smaller pets, but is fine with other dogs and cats.
