American Staffordshire Terrier Gifts

While grouped into the broad classification of pit bulls, the American Staffordshire Terrier should not be confused with the American Pit Bull Terrier with whom it share mutual ancestors and great physical similarities. The Staffordshire is a result of efforts to establish a pet breed out of the original pit bulls that were bred for bull baiting. They were accepted as a breed by the AKC in 1936, whereas the APBT has never been accepted. Unfortunately, the AST is also a victim of breed related legislation to restrict aggressive or dangerous dogs, because of their pit bull designation. (continued below)

(continued) In size the American Staffordshire Terrier runs between 17-19 inches, with emphasis on the body being in proportion. As a medium sized dog they can weigh anywhere from 57 to 67 lbs. Solids, parti-color and patched coats are acceptable, however more than 80% white is a disqualification, and the colors of black and tan, as well as liver are not encouraged. A great deal of work and time was invested in turning the breed around from their bull baiting ancestors, which has resulted in a friendly, devoted companion that is alert, intelligent, and not suited to being a guard dog for any reason. They are highly intelligent and easily trained, which can sometimes result in a need for retraining when they pick up unacceptable habits through imitation. © DogDecor.com
