They traveled to America courtesy of Robert Brooke who came to the United States in 1650 with a large pack of dogs that formed the roots of the breed here. Over the years, the emergence of the red fox, a faster game, meant the combining of the Irish Foxhound with British stock, and eventually the development of the American foxhound. (continued below)

 | (continued) This divergence has produced several different strains over the years, very different in appearance, but all accepted as part of the breed. The dog is difficult to find in show halls, because they are bred primarily for their original purpose – hunting.
The variety of strains means that any color is an accepted pattern, however the dog in general should measure 21-25 inches at the shoulder, and weigh 40-65 lbs. Their body is set high on the legs, which contributed to their speed, and in general they are to be considered a medium to large dog.
The American Foxhound is a bit of contradiction in terms of temperament. While very sweet and affectionate, and dedicated to their families, their independent streak and hunting instinct are so strong, that once on a scent they will ignore commands and continue to pursue their game. For this reason they are not to be trusted running freely. That alert intelligence can be managed very well with training and regular, plentiful exercise and play diversion. Because they are an active and intelligent dog, they are not suited to apartment living where they may be left for long periods unattended, as they will find something to do on their own that is usually unacceptable. © DogDecor.com | | | | |
