American Eskimo Gifts

The name is misleading, since the dog originated in Germany, an offshoot of the Spitz breed, which is typified by their white coats, pointed ears and muzzle, and a tail that curls up over the back. In part, the name is due to the fact that the Spitz’ ancestors migrated over the still joined continents from Alaska, and into Europe and Asia. Scientific testing has shown that over thousands of years, the Spitz dog is the least changed by man’s interference and crossbreeding. (continued below)

(continued) The “American” designation was applied after WWI when anti-German sentiment was running high. While accepted by the UKC long before the AKC, the UKC recognizes only the miniature version of the breed, and not the toy. Because of these two designations, in AKC the dog may range from 9-19” in height, and 10-35 lbs. depending on its sex and whether it is toy or miniature. Both however, carry a soft, dense undercoat that is covered by a long, straight layer of guard hair. The only acceptable color in any association is white, or “biscuit cream”, with brown eyes. Unlike their Spitz ancestors who could be aggressive working dogs, the American Eskimo was specifically bred to be a companion, and remains a favorite family dog today. They have an alert, intelligent demeanor, and are essentially a happy dog. Protective of their people, they will bark in a territorial manner but are unlikely to be aggressive. The Eskie is a strong-willed dog, which can be easily controlled by appropriate training, and redirecting their active intelligence into acceptable channels such as play and exercise. © DogDecor.com
