Alaskan Malamute Gifts

Due to the far-flung location of their birth, the Alaskan Malamute remained a pure breed for some time, with recent DNA analysis showing that they are one of the world’s oldest breeds which are distinct genetically, from all others. They were the working dog of the Mahlemut people in western Alaska, that cold, inhospitable and hard to reach land. While a natural as a sled dog, they are not suited to the famous Alaskan races. Their body type and strength developed naturally throughout a long history of pulling heavy burdens for new settlers, miners in the Alaskan Gold Rush and the sleds that carried Admiral Byrd and party to the South Pole. (continued) This means the dog carries substantial boning, has a deep chest and broad shoulders, all while standing up to 25” at the shoulders and weighing up to 85 lbs. with females being slightly smaller. They have a deep, thick undercoat covered by a guard coat that is very thick and rough in texture. These attributes allow the dog to live in temperature extremes and under conditions that many breeds could not tolerate. The Alaskan Malamute today is kept either as a family pet, or for recreational sledding. Potential owners should consider the amount of grooming that goes into a double-coated dog, particularly if your environment is a warm one. A generally amiable and happy dog, many owners report them to be aggressive towards smaller animals.
