| | | | | | | | Akita GiftsA larger dog that originates from a region known for its small lap pets, the Akita Inu originated in Japan, with Inu being the Japanese word for dog. Their ancestors were the matagi inu, a tribal dog that was used for hunting bears and guarding. That fierce nature was prized in the 17th century when dog fighting became popular in the Odate region. The matagi were eventually crossed with local dogs and the predecessor of today’s Akita was born. (continued below)

 | (continued) When Japan opened its shores to foreigners, an influx of other breeds, temporarily diluted the Akita until a preservation movement was mounted in 1927 to keep the dog “pure”.
The American standards calls for a dog that is up to 28” at the shoulder and weighs 75-120 lbs. However, a divergence developed between dogs bred in Japan and the U.S. resulted in American dogs being larger, with colors not accepted in Japan. These are known as the American Akita and the Akita Inu. Japan accepts only five colors, while the AKC accepts all variations. They are distinctly Spitz in appearance, and have a straight, full topcoat that stands away from the body, with a short, soft undercoat.
A highly intelligent dog, the Akita can become bored with its training, but is easy to housebreak and makes an amenable family pet. Far from its ancestors used for dog fighting, the modern Akita is good with children, does not require an excessive amount of exercise, and is intensely loyal. They belong to their people, and may not take kindly to aggression shown to those they love. A stubborn streak requires that owners have a firm hand and voice. © DogDecor.com | | | | |
