One of the many breeds to have originated in Germany, the Affenpinscher dates back at least 400 years, although the average dog was 2-3 inches higher at that time, and came in a variety of colors, from black, silver, beige or tan and black. These colors remain acceptable in the AKC, but European breed standards allow only the black.
